Decals

Overview

Decal textures are a powerful way to add detail, variation, and realism to your game environments by overlaying graphics on surfaces, such as signs, markings, damage effects, or graffiti. In Sceneri, decals can be created in two main ways: using an RGB Outline Cutout or an Alpha Channel Cutout. Each method provides a different approach to creating transparent areas within the texture, allowing for flexibility in design.

This article will guide you through creating each type of decal texture for use in Sceneri.

Method 1: Creating a Decal Texture with an RGB Outline Cutout

An RGB Outline Cutout decal is made by deleting the background pixels surrounding the desired texture, leaving only the graphic you want to appear as the decal. Here are the steps:

Steps for RGB Outline Cutout Decal:

  1. Open Your Image Editing Software:
    • Use an application like Adobe Photoshop, GIMP, or any other software that supports transparent backgrounds.
  2. Select the Desired Texture:
    • Load your image and identify the part you want to use as a decal.
  3. Delete the Background:
    • Use selection tools like the Magic Wand, Lasso, or Quick Selection tool to outline the background or any unwanted parts of the image.
    • Delete the selected background, leaving only the portion you want as the decal on a transparent layer.
  4. Ensure Transparency:
    • Double-check that the background is completely transparent (indicated by a checkerboard pattern in most editing software).
  5. Save the Image:
    • Save the decal texture as a PNG file, as this format supports transparency.
    • Ensure that the file resolution and dimensions match Sceneri’s recommended settings for decals.

Method 2: Creating a Decal Texture with an Alpha Channel Cutout

An Alpha Channel Cutout decal uses an additional channel in the image file to define transparent and opaque areas, allowing for finer control over transparency gradients.

Steps for Alpha Channel Cutout Decal:

  1. Open Your Image Editing Software:
    • Use software that supports alpha channels, such as Adobe Photoshop or GIMP.
  2. Add an Alpha Channel:
    • With your texture open, go to the channels panel and add an alpha channel (some software may already have it available).
    • The alpha channel controls transparency: white areas represent opaque sections, while black areas represent fully transparent sections.
  3. Define the Transparent Areas:
    • Use brushes, selection tools, or gradient fills in the alpha channel to create a precise cutout of your texture.
    • Adjust the transparency as needed by applying grayscale values (e.g., medium gray for semi-transparency).
  4. Save the Image:
    • Save the file as a PNG (for simple transparency) or TGA (for higher fidelity with alpha channels).
    • Check that the image resolution matches the decal settings in Sceneri.

Conclusion

By using either the RGB Outline Cutout or Alpha Channel Cutout method, you can easily create custom decals for Sceneri that add personality and detail to your game environments. The flexibility in decal creation allows you to control transparency effectively, enhancing the realism of your project and integrating decals seamlessly into your scenes.
