Overview

This guide provides a step-by-step process for exporting a basic asset from Blender in FBX format, which can then be imported into the Sceneri game engine. The FBX format maintains compatibility for 3D models, textures, and animations, ensuring that assets appear as intended in Sceneri.

Prepare the Asset in Blender

  1. Open Blender and load or create the asset you want to export.
  2. Name Your Object: To avoid confusion later, make sure the asset has a clear name in the Outliner panel.
  3. Apply Transforms:
    • Select your asset in Object Mode.
    • Press Ctrl + A and choose All Transforms. This applies all transformations (location, rotation, and scale), ensuring that your asset will export at the correct size and orientation.

Set Up Materials and Textures

  1. Add Materials:
    • If your asset has specific materials, ensure they are assigned in the Material Properties tab.
    • Use basic materials (e.g., diffuse, metallic, or roughness maps) that Sceneri can read.
  2. Pack Textures (Optional):
    • To avoid missing texture files, go to File > External Data > Pack Resources. This embeds all textures in the Blender file.
    • Note that Sceneri currently supports standard image formats like PNG and JPEG.

Check Scale and Units

  1. Set Units:
    • Go to Scene Properties (the cone icon) > Units.
    • Set Unit Scale to Metric with a unit scale of 1.0, which ensures consistency in Sceneri.
  2. Verify Scale:
    • Confirm that your asset is scaled properly in the Properties panel under the Item tab. A scale of (1, 1, 1) is ideal for export.

Export the Asset as FBX

  1. Go to File > Export > FBX (.fbx):
    • Navigate to File > Export and select FBX (.fbx).
  2. Adjust Export Settings:
    • In the export panel, set the following options:
      • Limit to Selected Objects: Check this option to export only your selected asset.
      • Scale: Set to 1.0.
      • Apply Transform: Enable this option to ensure that Blender’s applied transformations carry over to Sceneri.
      • Path Mode: Choose Copy and check Embed Textures if you packed textures in Step 2.
  3. Include Options:
    • Ensure that Mesh and Material options are checked in the Include section.
    • If you have animations, also check Armature and Animation options.
  4. Export:
    • Choose your desired save location and click Export FBX.

Tips and Best Practices

  • Naming Conventions: Name your objects and materials descriptively in Blender for easier identification in Sceneri.
  • Texture Formats: Use common formats like PNG or JPEG for textures, as they’re widely compatible with Sceneri.
  • Scale Consistency: Confirm the unit scale is set to Metric with 1.0 scale to avoid scaling inconsistencies.

Following these steps will allow you to export assets from Blender as FBX files and import them seamlessly into Sceneri, ensuring that your creations appear as intended in your scenes.
